Bay Shore, a hometown kid just opened the spot he wished he had in high school.
Burkii is now open on Howells Road, serving halal comfort food and a café menu with some seriously creative lattes. The name means “take a bite” in Urdu.
Owner Sammi Dutt grew up in Bay Shore. Back then, a quick bite after practice meant a deli or pizza, and halal options were hard to find. So he built his own.

The coffee side is the plot twist. There’s a Kashmiri latte with rose, cardamom and pistachio, a Parisian latte with lavender and vanilla cream, and a baklava-inspired latte with pistachio, cardamom and honey. Banana pudding matcha is on there too.
A Long Island story: Dutt spent more than three years renovating the space with his family. His mom, registered dietitian Thayba Moughal, works the kitchen with him and his sister runs operations. Since opening, local students, families and even a field hockey team have rolled in.
