Long Beach, grab the leash.
For the first time, dogs are getting beach days in the City by the Sea. The City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday night to approve an offseason pilot that lets leashed dogs on the sand, permit required.
- What
- Offseason dog beach pilot program
- Where
- Long Beach city beaches (the boardwalk stays dog-free)
- When
- Nov. 1, 2026 through April 15, 2027
- Price
- $25 beach permit for residents, $50 for nonresidents, plus a dog license
- Info
- City Clerk’s Office, 516-431-1000, Room 307 at City Hall, or longbeachny.gov
The rules are simple. Keep your pup on a leash the whole time. Have a valid dog license and current rabies shots. Clip the beach permit to the collar. Head straight to the sand, skip the boards, and pick up after your dog. Break the rules and you could lose beach privileges and get fined up to $1,000.
A Long Island story
Until now, dogs weren’t allowed on Long Beach’s beaches at all. Neighbors pushed for this one hard, with a petition of more than 1,900 names at the Oct. 20 meeting.
“I love dogs. I love this beach,” resident Barbara Dillion told the council. Fair. Empty winter sand plus a happy dog is a pretty perfect Sunday.
It’s a trial run, and the council will look at how the season goes before deciding what’s next. So be the good example. We’ll share updates here and on air. Keep it locked to WLIT.FM.
