Her biggest song by a billion

“Espresso” is Carpenter’s most-streamed song on Spotify, more than a billion plays ahead of the rest. Next on her list: “Please Please Please” at 2.02 billion, “Taste” at 1.60 billion and “Manchild” at 1.19 billion.

It was also her first No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200. Here at home it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for 65 weeks. At the 67th Grammys it won Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Remixed Recording, and it took Song of the Year at the MTV VMAs.

So who gets paid?

Nobody outside the deal knows for sure. Music Ledger (@musicledgerhq), a music-money commentary account, estimates the song has generated about $42.5 million across all platforms: roughly $34.9 million on the recording side and $7.6 million in publishing.

Music Ledger’s guess at the split: about $27.9 million to the label, $6.1 million to the publisher and admin, $1.4 million to the producer and $1.1 million to management. By that estimate, Carpenter keeps around $6.07 million, or 14.3%, before taxes.

Those numbers are Music Ledger’s estimates, not official figures. The account labels every number it posts as an estimate, and the real contract terms behind “Espresso” are not public.

Either way, a song that came out two and a half years ago is still doing a million plays a day. That’s a lot of espresso. Listen live on the WLIT.FM app and keep it locked for more music news.
