Judge in Justin Timberlake DWI Case Adds Community Service to Disputed Plea Deal

In a surprising turn of events, Justin Timberlake was sentenced to 25 hours of community service after a Sag Harbor judge rejected a lenient plea deal in the singer’s DWI case. The original agreement, which would have let the pop star off with a small fine and a public statement about his Hamptons drunk-driving arrest, was deemed insufficient by Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace.

The judge expressed disappointment with the proposed deal, which had been negotiated by prosecutors and would not have required Timberlake to undergo rehabilitation or perform any community service.

“This proposal literally allows the accused to say a few words and walk out the door with no period of accountability,” Irace said, challenging the terms of the plea.

Prosecutor Patrick O’Connell defended the deal, arguing that Timberlake’s celebrity status would amplify the reach of his public service announcement worldwide. However, Irace pressed the 43-year-old singer, asking if he would be willing to complete community service. Timberlake, dressed in a casual gray cardigan, khakis, and a pearl necklace, responded, “I’d be honored.”

The case stems from Timberlake’s June 18 arrest in the Hamptons after he allegedly blew through a stop sign and swerved out of his lane. Police claim the singer refused a Breathalyzer test three times after admitting he had consumed one martini earlier that night.

Timberlake pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while alcohol impaired, instead of the more serious driving while intoxicated (DWI) charge. Addressing the court, Timberlake acknowledged his poor judgment, saying, “I should’ve had better judgment. I understand the seriousness of this.”

Judge Irace ordered Timberlake to perform 25 hours of community service at a nonprofit of his choice, alongside the public statement. The singer later issued the statement outside the courthouse, urging the public to avoid drinking and driving. “Even one drink — don’t get behind the wheel of a car,” Timberlake said during his remarks, adding that he hopes his mistake can serve as a lesson to others.

As part of the sentencing, Timberlake was fined $500, hit with a $260 surcharge, and had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney emphasized that Timberlake was not given any special treatment due to his celebrity status. “Justice should be applied equally to all individuals, regardless of their wealth or celebrity status,” Tierney stated, adding that Timberlake’s plea deal was consistent with similar cases.

Despite the controversy, Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., defended his client’s actions, stating that Timberlake had only consumed one drink over two hours and was not intoxicated to the degree initially reported.
