Huntington Turns Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness: Highlights from Pink in the Park

Huntington went pink this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, hosting an impactful event that brought the community together in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. Councilwoman Theresa Mari, alongside Supervisor Ed Smyth, partnered with Huntington Matters and Reworld to invite the public to “Pink in the Park,” a Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Fair held at Heckscher Park. The event highlighted the importance of raising awareness, providing essential health resources, and celebrating the resilience of breast cancer survivors.

The event, described as a “resounding success” by organizers, attracted over 60 vendors, offering health and wellness resources to the attendees. Despite a few brief weather interruptions, participants enjoyed a scenic walk around Heckscher Park and were treated to a performance by Dancin’ Feet, creating an atmosphere of hope and unity.

Councilwoman Mari, a breast cancer survivor herself, shared her personal journey, emphasizing the significance of early detection and the powerful role of community support. “The success of Pink in the Park wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of so many,” Mari said. “I am incredibly grateful to all the vendors, local officials, and attendees who came together to create such a supportive and inspiring day for our community.”

The event saw strong support from local officials, including State Sen. Mario Mattera, who shared his heartfelt account of his wife Terry’s battle with breast cancer. Other attendees included Councilman Salvatore Ferro, Director of Highways Andre Sorrentino, Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, Director of Parks Cable “Todd” Jamison, Chief of Staff Michelle McCarthy, Town Attorney Susan Coleman, Congressman Nick LaLota, and Huntington Republican Party Chairman Thomas McNally. Their presence highlighted Huntington’s collective commitment to raising awareness and supporting those impacted by breast cancer.

Pink in the Park offered more than just health information. It featured an array of vendors, inspiring performances, children’s activities, and opportunities for screenings and education—providing a vital platform for the community to take action against breast cancer. As Mari’s Office noted, “Pink in the Park was more than just a fair; it was a day of hope, healing, and empowerment for those touched by breast cancer.”
