Long Island Pizza Shops Unite for Community Fundraiser Supporting Officer’s Family
A community-driven effort is bringing dozens of Long Island pizzerias together for a cause that goes beyond food. Later this month, local pizza businesses are expected to participate in a one-day fundraiser designed to support the family of Nassau County police officer Patricia Espinosa.
The initiative, called “Pizza Against Drunk Driving,” is being organized by the grassroots group LI Pizza Strong. On February 25, participating locations will contribute five dollars from every pizza sold, with all funds directed to Espinosa’s family. The campaign highlights how a simple purchase can double as a show of solidarity and financial support.
Espinosa, 42, died after being struck by a driver suspected of impairment while traveling to work in St. James. She is survived by her husband, who is also a police officer, and their young daughter. Organizers say the fundraiser aims both to assist her loved ones and to reinforce awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
LI Pizza Strong has coordinated similar efforts in the past, forming in 2023 to help people impacted by the Farmingdale High School band bus tragedy. Since then, the group has led multiple charitable campaigns across the region — including a major drive that generated significant financial support for the family of a slain New York City detective — demonstrating the ability of local businesses to rally around those facing sudden hardship.
A list of participating pizzerias is expected to be shared through the organization’s social channels, with additional updates anticipated as the event approaches. Supporters are encouraged to take part simply by purchasing pizza on the designated day, contributing to a collective response rooted in community compassion.
